What should be in a christmas feeding homeless pack

The festive season of Christmas brings a flurry of joy, twinkling lights, and the warmth of togetherness.

However, it’s also a stark reminder to think about homeless people living on the streets and what they lack.

The struggle to stay warm and find shelter is real and intensifying as we speak.

One way we can make a real difference is by creating Christmas feeding homeless packages filled with essential items to give the homeless a sense of comfort that they are not alone and can never be forgotten.

Ideas for Christmas gifts or packs

Christmas is a time for family, joy, and of course, staying warm!

Those who are homeless under the harsh winter chill can find this festive season tough

Here are some thoughtful items you can include in your Christmas pack to help someone in need feel a little more comfortable this season:

  • Food

Food is a basic need, and during the holidays, a nourishing meal can be especially meaningful. It’s important that when we cook delicious meals, we remember those who in this season can’t afford to put a decent meal on the table. Here are some meal prep idea you can do:

  • Non-perishable:. Canned goods like tuna, beans, and hearty soups provide protein and essential nutrients. Fresh food doesn’t seem like a viable option, so focus on items with a long shelf life
  • Easy to eat:  Go for pre-packaged snacks like granola bars, trail mix, and nuts for quick energy boosts, as many people experiencing homelessness may not have access to cooking facilities.
  • Hydration: A bottle of water is also important, especially in colder climates. Consider adding juice boxes or powdered drink mixes for variety.
  • Holiday Treats: A small pack of cookies, candy canes, or a single-serving Christmas pudding can add a touch of festive cheer.
  • Socks

You might be surprised to learn that socks are consistently ranked as the #1 most requested item by homeless people. They provide much-needed warmth and hygiene, and fresh pairs can make a big difference.

  • Blankets & Outerwear

Frigid temperatures are no joke. A warm blanket or a good quality winter jacket, hat, scarf, and gloves or mittens can offer critical protection from the elements.

  • Feminine Hygiene Products

These are often overlooked but incredibly important items. Including them demonstrates that you’ve thoughtfully considered the well-being of women experiencing homelessness.

  • Hand Sanitizer, Toothbrushes & Toothpaste

Maintaining basic hygiene can be a challenge without access to proper facilities. These essentials will help someone feel a bit fresher and more confident.

  • Chapstick

Dry, cracked lips are uncomfortable, especially in cold weather. A small tube of chapstick can provide much-needed relief.

  • Disposable Lighters

For those who rely on lighters for warmth or to prepare food, including a few disposables can be a thoughtful addition.

  • Non-perishable, Pre-Packaged, SMALL Food Items

Granola bars, nuts, dried fruit, and other individually wrapped snacks are perfect for someone on the go. Focus on smaller portions that are easy to carry and eat. Consider adding high-protein options like nuts and trail mix to keep someone feeling satisfied for longer.

  • A hand-written Card

A handwritten card with a message of encouragement or well wishes can brighten someone’s day.  A bus pass or gift card offers a sense of empowerment and allows someone to make their own choices, which can be a welcome gift during the holiday season.

How to Assemble?

How to put it together… you ask?

Well now that you have your supplies, it’s time to assemble your care package! Here are some additional tips for packaging these items:

  • Durable Packaging: Use a sturdy backpack or reusable bag that can be carried easily.
  • Organization: Organize the items neatly for easy access.
  • Presentation: While not essential, wrapping the bag or decorating it can give a festive feel.

Where to Distribute

Once your care packages are done, now comes the challenging part of finding those who need them most.  Here are some ways to get involved:

  • Local Shelters: Contact homeless shelters within your vicinity and inquire about their donation needs. They can often connect you with those who would benefit most from your care packages.
  • Soup Kitchens: Soup kitchens often serve individuals experiencing homelessness. Reach out and offer to donate your care packages directly to them.
  • Outreach Programs: Many communities have organizations that work directly with people experiencing homelessness. Christmas people foundation is a charitable organization that gives people like you chances to make someone feel noticed, cared about, and a bit closer to home during the holidays.

A helping hand is all they need

Remember, even the smallest gestures can make a big difference in someone’s life during the holidays.

Let’s work together to ensure that the Christmas spirit of compassion reaches everyone, especially those who need it most.

May we be instruments of hope and love

We ask a blessing upon the homeless,
marginalized and underserved in our midst.

We remember our sisters and brothers—adults,

families, children– who are living with

no security, no shelter, and no safety from

the outside world.

Help us to provide extra warmth, peace and

opportunity for a better life. May we

supply nourishing food and drink that

their bodies may be nourished.

May we open our hearts and our hands to ease

their worries and provide hope where

there is no hope.

Through the giving of our time and our treasure,

may we demonstrate our love and pledge

that people on the street shall never be

forgotten.

May I offer compassion to those in need and

never miss an opportunity to work towards

ending poverty and homelessness so that no

one will live in want or in hunger.
